In this drama by award-winning filmmaker Jake Bann (GOOD TASTE – Special Jury Mention: Boston Student Film Festival; Official Selection: Boston International Film Festival, New York City International Film Festival) and producer Justin Wiemer, Michael Turtle plays James, a social worker tasked with protecting his most gifted client from the throes of a gang. Set in Roxbury, MA, the film chronicles the trials and tribulations of the client-worker relationship and the circumstances that surround the social working profession. Insightful, harrowing, dark, and masterfully shot by cinematographer Jeremy Hartman, DETERRENCE is an observant and reflective analysis on all roads paved with good intentions.

Special Jury Mention – 2014 Boston Student Film Fest

+ Michael Turtle

Born and raised in Ireland, Michael moved to the US in the late nineties to pursue his passion for film and theatre. The roles Michael has portrayed range from Shakespeare to contemporary dramas such as “One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.” Michael can be found working in repertory theaters, as well as in dozens of films, primetime television and national commercials. Some of Michael’s favorite roles include Billy Bibbit in “Cuckoo’s Nest”, Libido in “Bob’s Date,” and Nicholas Gordon in “The Murder Trial of John Gordon” (a production that lead to the exoneration of John Gordon years after his execution).

Trained as an electrician, outside of acting and electrical jobs, Michael enjoys reading, technology and outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, rock climbing and cycling with his wife Christina.

Michael says working with this talented cast and crew was a joy and looks forward to working with them again in the future.

+ Jared Brown

Jared began his career as a model with the Kiddn’ Around Talent Agency in Atlanta, GA. In addition to winning several local and national oratorical contests, he attended the Governor’s Honors Program at Valdosta State University, studied with the Dance Theater of Harlem, and was accepted into the Geoffrey Ballet’s Training Program. His most recent theatrical credits include M.L.K.: A Monumental Life at Constitution Hall (MLK – Age 15 & Ensemble Member) and Emerson College’s productions of Grapes of Wrath (Floyd & Muley); Twilight L.A. 1992 (Twilight Bey); and Bud, Not Buddy (Bud). Israeli Stage credits include The Banality of Love (Rafael/Michael) and Now the Jerk Is Somewhere Else Again (Sprayer). Jared, along with Tyler Catanella, is a co-founder and company member of the “Paradise Lost Movement Collective.”

+ Susan Daly

Susan has been performing for over twenty years. She started her career in musical theatre and holds a B.A. in Theatre Performance. She is a former member of The CitiArts Modern Dance Company (Hartford, CT) and has performed professionally in various productions, including “South Pacific” (Liat), “The Wizard of Oz” (Dorothy Gale), and “The Music Man” (Marian Paroo), directed by broadway choreographer Norb Joerder. She has also performed in several off-broadway plays such as “A Boy’s Life” (Karen) and “Blackout New York,” from which The Travel Channel’s “Best Haunted Houses” special will feature her performance this fall.

+ Lucas Gray

Lucas Gray is an up-and-coming actor from the Boston area. He started his career in theater, appearing in productions like Godspell (John The Baptist & Judas) and Aida (Mereb). He has worked on several Boston University student films aside from DETERRENCE and is currently in the process of relocating to New York to continue crafting and refining his skills on stage.

+ Jake Bann – Director

Jake Bann is a 2013 graduate of Boston University with Bachelor’s degrees in Film & Television and English. He currently works as a writer and director in Los Angeles. After making a bevy of short films as an undergraduate, he realized he was decently good at it and decided to make a living working in film.

+ Justin Wiemer – Producer and Editor

Justin Wiemer is a 2013 graduate of Boston University with degrees in Film & Television and Business Administration. He recently moved to Austin, TX to join the city’s growing independent film community. He has interned at Buckeye Pictures, LLC and is currently the Business Development Coordinator at Tugg.com. Justin loves all aspects of production and has been a producer, cinematographer, editor, and production designer – usually at the same time.
To date, he has seen over 1100 films.

Jeremy Hartman recently moved from Boston to LA to work as a cinematographer.

+ Alex Hawley – Sound Designer

Alex Hawley is a 2013 graduate of Boston University with a degree in Film & Television. Alex recently moved to New York City with the goal of honing his skills in the world of film editing. He is currently a post intern at Greenpoint Pictures in Brooklyn and in the past has held post internships at production companies in Boston. Although editing is Alex’s main focus at the moment, he is passionate towards all aspects of filmmaking and hopes to own his own production company at some point in his career.

May 17th, 2013  – Deterrence premiered during a showcase of short films produced for Boston University’s Production III course.

March 22nd, 2014  – Deterrence is an official selection at the Boston Student Film Fest! Bright Family Screening Room, Paramount Center at Emerson College, 6:30 PM. Deterrence was awarded the Special Jury Mention!
